4WD mastery and leadership - it has always been at the core of the Jeep® brand.
A Jeep Trail Rated® badge is found on all 4x4s that pass a series of grueling tests designed to proved off-road capability on the world’s most demanding terrain.
There are five main categories of testing:
- Traction
- Ground Clearance
- Water Fording
- Maneuverability
- Articulation
Some of Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited's bragging rights (as if it needs any):

- Jeep® Trail Rated® vehicles are designed to perform a variety of off-road conditions identified by five performance categories.
- Ground Clearance
- The ability to drive over large obstacles or logs in combination with approach/departure/breakover angles.
- Articulation
- The ability to keep tires in contact with the road, providing traction to climb over large obstacles.
- Maneuverability
- The ability to navigate around obstacles that are tightly situated.
- Traction
- The ability to transfer power to the road or trail along with the ability of the suspension to keep the wheels in contact with the terrain.
- Water Fording

- Go as slow as possible, as fast as necessary

- Rock-Trac® 4WD

More control. More torque at the wheels. Goes virtually anywhere you point it. Rock-Trac's 4:1 low-gear ratio allows Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon to crawl at a lower speed but with greater increase in torque at the wheels, making it easier to trek over large rocks and timber. The main case joint is clamped by 18 bolts added structural stiffness. Rock-Trac is a part-time system and is not recommended for use on dry pavement.
- Command-Trac® 4WD

No-nonsense — tough as railroad spikes. When four-wheel power is required, like off-roading or in slick conditions where more traction is required, the second-generation Command Trac® NV241 kicks into action and delivers equal power to all four corners, getting through the rough stuff with ease. The main case joint is clamped by 18 bolts added structural stiffness. Command-Trac is a part-time system and is not recommended for use on dry pavement.
- Angles

Added Jeep® capability is evident from Wrangler Unlimited's 10.5-inches of ground clearance (Rubicon), 44.4-degree approach angle, 40.5-degree departure angle and 20.8-degree breakover angle.
Rubicon has best-in-class ground clearance[1] along with best-in-class approach and departure angles[1]. The front air dam is removable to provide added flexibility (better approach angle) when off-roading.
- Electronic Sway Bar Disconnect

This system allows you, by the flip of a switch, to automatically disengage the sway bar when driving under 18 mph in 4WD-low (4LO) mode. The front wheels can then drop and compress up to 25% further on Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. On a 20-degree RTI ramp Rubicon scored a remarkable 644 with its standard Electronic Sway Bar disconnected (and a respectable 484 connected).
- Two-Wheel Drive (2WD)

4WD capability has been the Jeep® vehicle's trademark for over six decades, but Jeep® Wrangler Unlimited Sahara and Unlimited X are available in a two-wheel drive (2WD) configuration when 4WD capability is not required.
